Groundwork Luton and South Bedfordshire is working with the National Trust and Bedfordshire County Council to run an activity programme based around the new multi-user route at Dunstable Downs. The route, designed for use by both walkers and cyclists, links the Chilterns Gateway visitors centre to the town of Dunstable.
Groundwork currently runs a monthly health walk on the Downs. The walks take place on the third Wednesday of each month, departing from the Chiltern’s Gateway Centre at 10.30am and follow a fairly flat, surfaced route along the top of the site.
Groundwork is currently looking for volunteers to help set up a new, longer health walk on the site, volunteers would only be required to give 2 hours a month and attend a one day walking for health (web link for walking for health http://www.whi.org.uk/) training course. As part of the activity programme Groundwork also run guided walks and family days at the site. So far in 2008 they have offered an Easter Egg hunt, a Dawn Chorus Walk delivered by the Luton and South Bedfordshire RSPB group and Rock Around Dunstable Downs, a day of geology themed activities led by the Luton and Bedfordshire Geology Group (web link - http://www.bedsrigs.org.uk/)

The activity programme, supported by Bedfordshire County Council ith funding from Sport England and the Big Lottery Fund’s joint ‘Active England’ programme, is to promote walking and cycling for both recreational and everyday journeys, encourage people to access the new facilities on Dunstable Downs by sustainable means and support work to develop and diversify the audience for the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the new Chilterns Gateway centre.
